Spain: Increasing demand healthcare

In the last year, there has been an increase in DEMAND FOR HEALTHCARE SERVICES 📈 in Spain, the causes and degree of persistence of which are still uncertain.

If these dynamics were to persist over time and be related to a persistent deterioration in the overall health of the Spanish population, their economic impact could be significant. Additionally, there has been an increase in the number of EMPLOYED INDIVIDUALS WHO LOSE DAYS OF WORK due to illness, temporary incapacity, or accidents 🩻

There is considerable uncertainty regarding the causes and possible degree of persistence of these developments 😷, some of which appear to be in line with the predictions of the literature studying the sequelae of COVID-19 on a widely 💉vaccinated population that becomes infected.

To the extent that these developments may be long-lasting and associated with a persistent deterioration in the overall health of the Spanish population, they could require a STRUCTURAL INCREASE IN HEALTHCARE SPENDING, which is still difficult to quantify, and negatively affect potential output, although the exact magnitude of these effects remains uncertain.

📌 There are several MEASURES that policymakers and stakeholders could implement TO MITIGATE THE potential economic consequences of a persistent deterioration in the health of the Spanish population:

➤ 🚴🏻 Investing in PREVENTIVE HEALTHCARE MEASURES: public health campaigns to promote healthy lifestyles, vaccinations, and early detection of diseases.
➤ 🏡 IMPROVING ACCESS to healthcare services: increasing the number of healthcare professionals and facilities, reducing waiting times, and improving the quality of care.
➤ 👩🏻‍💻 Encouraging a HEALTHY WORK-LIFE BALANCE: flexible working hours, telecommuting, and providing employees with access to mental health support.
➤ ⚛️ Promoting RESEARCH AND INNOVATION: investing in research and development in healthcare and biotechnology to develop new treatments, improve healthcare delivery, and enhance public health.
Implementing
➤ 🪴SOCIAL SAFETY NETS: unemployment benefits, disability insurance, and other forms of social protection to support individuals and families affected by health-related issues.
